Have a Firearm Component but No CAD Data?

DeWys Engineering specializes in firearm reverse engineering services for firearm manufacturers, accessory companies, suppressor companies, gunsmiths, defense contractors, and product development teams.

Since 2014, our team has been helping customers convert physical parts into accurate digital engineering data through professional 3D laser scanning, reverse engineering, and CAD modeling services. What started as reverse engineering work for foundries, machine builders, tooling companies, and heavy equipment manufacturers has expanded into the firearms industry, where we now support projects ranging from legacy firearm reproduction to aftermarket accessory development.

Using advanced 3D scanning equipment and industry-leading reverse engineering software, we create manufacturing-ready CAD models that can be used for product development, design modifications, prototyping, inspection, tooling development, and production sourcing.

Unlike many reverse engineering firms, DeWys Engineering holds a Federal Firearms License (FFL 07) and SOT 02, allowing customers to legally ship many firearm-related components directly to our facility for scanning, measurement, engineering, and development work.

Why Firearm Manufacturers Choose DeWys Engineering

Many companies can scan a firearm component. Far fewer understand how firearm products are actually developed.

At DeWys Engineering, reverse engineering is not simply a scanning service. Our team combines years of reverse engineering experience with hands-on firearm product development knowledge. We understand how firearm components interact with one another, how accessories interface with host platforms, and how manufacturing constraints influence product design.

Whether you’re recreating an obsolete component, developing a new accessory, modernizing a legacy design, or creating a completely new product, our team can provide the digital engineering foundation needed to move your project forward.

What Is Firearm Reverse Engineering?

Firearm reverse engineering is the process of capturing physical components and converting them into accurate digital 3D CAD models.

This process allows manufacturers, designers, and product developers to:

Our goal is not simply to produce an auto surface of a 3D model. We focus on creating usable engineering data that can support future product development and manufacturing activities. The 3D models that we can supply you can be tooling or machining ready.

Firearm Components We Commonly Reverse Engineer

DeWys Engineering supports a wide variety of reverse engineering projects across the firearms industry.

Common Firearm Reverse Engineering Projects

Legacy Firearm Reproduction

Many older firearms and components were developed decades before modern CAD systems became commonplace. We help customers recreate critical engineering data for obsolete or discontinued products so replacement parts, tooling, and new production components can be manufactured.

Accessory Development

One of the most common reverse engineering projects we see involves developing accessories that must precisely interface with an existing firearm platform. By scanning the host firearm or component, we can generate accurate CAD data that serves as the foundation for new accessory development.

Product Modernization

Older firearm designs often require updates to manufacturing methods, materials, or design features. Reverse engineering allows existing products to be converted into digital CAD models that can then be improved, refined, and optimized.

Competitive Product Analysis

Understanding existing market solutions is often a critical part of product development. Reverse engineering can provide engineers with a highly accurate digital representation of an existing component to support design studies, packaging analysis, and interface development.

Firearm Reverse Engineering Project Examples

Over the years, DeWys Engineering has supported firearm manufacturers, accessory companies, suppressor developers, and product development teams on a wide variety of firearm reverse engineering projects. Below are a few representative examples of the types of work we commonly perform.

Legacy Firearm Component Recreation

Reverse engineered discontinued firearm components for a revolver platform that had no existing CAD data or engineering documentation available. Using 3D scanning and reverse engineering techniques, our team generated manufacturing-ready 3D CAD models that allowed the customer to reproduce replacement parts for a long-discontinued revolver product line.

Aftermarket Accessory Development

A customer approached us for assistance with the 3D scanning and reverse engineering of Glockยฎ pistol slides so they could develop aftermarket versions featuring unique styling and design elements. In addition to generating the scan data and CAD models, our engineering team later assisted with product development by creating production-ready slide designs based on the customer’s industrial design concepts when their internal engineering resources became overloaded.

Magazine & Feeding System Modifications

Digitized existing firearm magazine assemblies to support compatibility studies, design modifications, and product development efforts. By reverse engineering the magazine geometry, the customer was able to utilize an existing magazine design for a new firearm platform, reducing development costs while shortening overall project timelines.

Suppressor Competitive Analysis

Assisted a customer with the CT scanning of several existing rifle and pistol suppressors as part of a competitive analysis and product development project. The resulting scan data was delivered along with interactive 3D visualization tools that allowed the customer to inspect internal suppressor geometry and construction without the need to section, saw, or wire EDM the suppressors, which would have permanently destroyed them.

Following the scanning phase, the customer engaged DeWys Engineering to reverse engineer specific internal and external suppressor features into CAD models. These models were then used by the customer’s engineering team to perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis and better understand how various design characteristics affected suppressor performance, gas flow, and overall system behavior.

Our Firearm Reverse Engineering Process

1. Free Project Review / Quote

We start by understanding your goals, deliverables, timeline, and intended use of the data we can generate an accurate quote for the costs and lead time that will be needed to deliver your 3D CAD data.

2. 3D Scanning & Measurement

Components are scanned using professional metrology-grade equipment capable of capturing millions of data points with exceptional accuracy. Depending on project requirements, contact probing, laser scanning, structured light scanning, or industrial CT scanning may be utilized.

3. CAD Reconstruction

Scan data is processed and reconstructed into usable engineering geometry using professional reverse engineering software (Geomagic DesignX).

Based on your project needs the deliverables may include:

  • Raw scan data (STL mesh files)
  • Auto-surfaced CAD models
  • Hybrid CAD models combining parametric and surface geometry
  • Fully parametric CAD models
  • STEP files
  • Parasolid files
  • Native CAD files where applicable
  • Inspection reports comparing CAD data back to the original scan
Not every firearm reverse engineering project requires a fully parametric CAD model. Depending on your intended application, timeline, and budget, DeWys Engineering can provide anything from raw scan data to manufacturing-ready parametric CAD models.

4. Validation & Review

Generated CAD data is compared back to the scan data to verify accuracy and ensure customer requirements have been met. These results can be shared as a live 3d model you can review yourself via the free viewer that is available for Geomagic ControlX (our inspection software)

5. Engineering Support (Optional)

Many customers continue working with our engineering team after reverse engineering is complete.

Reverse Engineering Since 2014

DeWys Engineering has been providing reverse engineering services since 2014.

Our team originally built its reputation supporting foundries, machine builders, tooling manufacturers, construction companies, agricultural equipment OEM’s, and maintenance departments. Over time, those same capabilities naturally expanded into the firearms industry as customers began seeking engineering support for firearm components, suppressors, accessories, and legacy weapon systems.

Today we continue to apply the same disciplined reverse engineering process across both industrial and firearm-related projects. If you’re interested in learning more about our broader reverse engineering capabilities, explore our General Reverse Engineering Services, Legacy Parts Reverse Engineering Services, and Firearm Design & Engineering Services pages for additional project examples and capabilities.
